Men's Breakfast Considers Chartering as United Methodist Men's Group

Published December 13, 2008

The monthly Men's Breakfast group is considering applying for charter membership in United Methodist Men. Two representatives of UMM -- Johnell Norton and Lee Arnold, both members of Ashbury UMC in Warwick, Rhode Island -- briefed the group on the activities of the nationwide men's group and detailed how to charter for membership. Norton, a life long member of the United Methodist Church, echoed the mission of UMM: "To declare the centrality of Christ in every man's life, to promote the spiritual growth of men through effective discipleship, and to model the servant leadership of Christ in our daily lives." UMM is active nationwide in various missions and holds regional and national conferences. The local Men's Breakfast meets on the second Saturday of each month and raises donations for the North Kingstown Food Pantry while enjoying Christian fellowship.

Jay Hickey, who coordinates the activities of the Men's Breakfast group at North Kingstown UMC and cooks the monthly breakfasts, is encouraging the men of the church to consider membership as a step to increase the spirituality of the group and to connect with the national group of men, while retaining the group's monthly fellowship gatherings. Currently, Ashbury UMC in Warwick is the only United Methodist Church in Rhode Island to have a chartered group in UMM. Mr. Norton and Mr. Arnold would like to see that list of churches expand. Several churches in Massachusetts and other New England states have local chapters.

The breakfast session generated strong support for the move which, if approved, could lead to charter membership for North Kingstown in the next few months. If you are interested and want to learn more, please contact Jay Hickey. More about United Methodist Men in New England - website neumm.org
