------------------------------------------------------- PASTOR BEVERLY ACCEPTS POSITION OF SUPERINTENDENT, MID MAINE DISTRICT -- LEAVING NKUMC IN JULY
Published January 7, 2008
January 5, 2008
Dear Members and Friends,
The Epiphany story about the Wise Men going to see Jesus includes the very important observation that after worshiping Jesus the Wise Men returned home by a different way. In our lives we are frequently faced with the need or opportunity to travel a different road. As a congregation we are now presented with a new road. Within the United Methodist Church, pastors are always appointed for one year at a time, renewable for one year. It has been my privilege to be your pastor for 10 ½ years. Bishop Peter Weaver has asked me to accept an appointment effective July 1 as the District Superintendent to the Mid Maine District of our conference. After a time of prayerful discernment to be open to God’s call, I have agreed to accept that appointment. The next few months will be a time of transition during which I will be expected to attend some meetings and events to help me learn about this new form of ministry. However, during that time we will also continue to be in ministry together and seek to be open to what God is visioning for us. For some this may come as a complete surprise. For others the details and timing will be a surprise; but many of you know that within the United Methodist Church pastors come and go. By the grace of God, by the time I leave here, we will have been together in ministry for eleven years. During that time we have had opportunities to dream dreams, develop new ministries and respond to the needs God has placed before us. Let us remember that shared ministry is not about the appointed pastor. It is not even about the congregation. It is about the living breathing body of Christ and how we respond to God's call every day. I invite you to join me in prayer for the Staff Parish Relations Committee of this congregation as they share with our District Superintendent the needs, concerns and hopes of this congregation, our District Superintendents and our Bishop as they prayerfully seek to discern who God may be calling to be the new pastor of this congregation and community. I also ask you to join in prayer for your new pastor whoever he or she might be. It will be important for all of us to realize that just as the Magi did, we will also be following the light of Christ and our journeys will be guided by that light.
May God Bless Each of you, Pastor Beverly
REVEREND BEVERLY STENMARK TO BE APPOINTED AS DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT IN MID-MAINE EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2008 Published January 7, 2008 Bishop Peter D. Weaver of the New England Conference of The United Methodist Church will appoint The Reverend Beverly E. Stenmark as District Superintendent for the Mid-Maine District, effective July 1, 2008. Rev. Stenmark succeeds The Rev. David Svenson, who is retiring this year after a career in ministry spanning 34 years, the past eight of those years serving as District Superintendent. “We give thanks to Rev. Svenson for his many years of dedicated service. We have all been blessed by the wonderful ministry that David has brought to the Conference, and in particular to the Mid-Maine District, both in his roles as a local church pastor and as District Superintendent,” said Bishop Weaver. Rev. Stenmark has been serving in pastoral ministry for more than 17 years, most recently for 11 years as pastor of the North Kingstown United Methodist Church in North Kingstown, RI. Prior to serving in North Kingstown, she was the pastor of Myricks United Methodist Church in Berkley, MA. She has also worked as Chaplain for United Methodist Elder Care in East Providence, RI, and has been active in organizations such as the Faith Alliance Against Domestic Violence and the Rhode Island State Emergency Response Team, as well as on various District committees. Rev. Stenmark received her Masters of Divinity degree from Andover Newton Theological School in 1993. “Rev. Stenmark has had an outstanding record of spiritual leadership, leading to significant local church vitality, growth and engagement with the ‘world parish’,” Bishop Weaver stated. “The key has been her own deep faith journey and excellent skills in inspiring and equipping others to discover their own gifts for ministry. She has also given community leadership in justice issues - issues that are facing the Mid-Maine area. I am grateful to the Mid-Maine District Committee on the Superintendency for their excellent help in this process, and to Rev. Stenmark for her commitment to serve Christ and the Church in this new role.” Appointments for District Superintendents in The United Methodist Church officially begin on July 1 of the appointment year. Rev. Stenmark will begin serving the six year term of her appointment as District Superintendent of the Mid-Maine District on July 1, 2008. Rev. Svenson will retire on that date.
October 19, 2007 -- Saffiatu arrives safely in Rhode Island
Hello everyone! Lisa just called to tell me that Jeff
and Saffiatu have arrived from Sierra Leone!!! She asked me to send an email
out to all of you to let you know so that we can all share in their joy and
excitement. Their flight was delayed by about an hour but they have arrived
safely and are now on their way home. Saffiatu is doing well. They had a
wheelchair to bring her out but she is in good spirits and as Lisa said,
“It’s great to see all the girls together!” They will be lying low this
weekend and getting some rest and then Saffiatu has medical appointments
Monday and Tuesday. It’s been a long road and now there is another long and
exciting road beginning for all of them. Pastor Beverly October 16, 2007 Saffiatu has been granted a visa to travel to the United States, according to Lisa Dallas. The visa will be picked up Wednesday October 16th, the same day as the scheduled court appearance. Lisa's email: Hi Everyone! We have wonderful news. I am almost afraid to actually say it for fear it will go away! Jeff and Safiatu went in for the interview for her visa today and it was granted. They can pick it up tomorrow at 3pm! Yeah! I spoke with Safiatu on the phone and she was thrilled and, according to Jeff, her parents are ‘relieved’. Her English is a bit better than I have experienced in the past. I attribute that to Jeff’s CT/RI accent. It was quite a long ordeal. The appointment was scheduled for yesterday but, as I was told, they had an ‘unexpected holiday’. You can bet that I will be asking questions about that one! Here is how it went… They arrived at the US Embassy for their appointed time at 10am and were told they were supposed to be there at 7:45 due to the holiday change. How frustrating! However, they were invited in. This was then followed by the US Embassy officer informing them that the application fee and Safiatu’s visa picture had not been presented 2 weeks ago by the person we had submit the application paperwork. A paper chase ensued. The three amigos (Jeff, Dorcas and Safiatu) traveled around the terribly crowded city of Freetown, begging people to let them to the front of the line in order to make the deadline at the US Embassy… they locked the doors at 11! At 2 minutes to 11 they entered the US Embassy with money and passport pictures in hand! They were interviewed, whew! I guess it was more like quizzed! Anyway, the officer again requested a letter from Saffiatu’s parents (notarized of course) and a copy of her birth certificate. Another chase around Freetown followed! Just ask Jeff where to get something notarized in Freetown, now he knows! When returning for the second time, documents in hand, they were told they would get a call in a few days with the answer to the visa request. With much polite protesting, I am sure, the officer was informed that the travel date was Thurs so this needed to be expedited. He would do what he could. They left, uncertain of the results. A couple of hours later, the phone rang with the good news that the visa can be picked up tomorrow at 3pm! What incredible persistence and patience that must have taken for all involved! Well, the final step will take place tomorrow at a court appearance. This is the real reason that Jeff has traveled to the far reaches of the earth. Well, actually the real reason he has traveled to the far reaches of the earth is to save that beautiful little smile on that 12 year old girl! I will keep you posted when more info comes through. Thank you again for all your prayers. It is so clear how God has been with them on this journey. We are having the youth compete against the adults with all the proceeds going to annual conference. The rules are slightly different than a normal penny challenge. Any silver put into the youth jar counts as negative 1 penny. Any silver put into the adult jar counts as negative full face value (nickel= negative 5 pennies; dime = negative 10 pennies, a dollar = negative 100 pennies).
SAFE HAVEN CELL PHONES– In partnership with Safe Haven Interfaith Partnership Against Domestic Violence, we are collecting cell phones to be re-programmed for 911 use by victims of domestic violence. Those too old will be sold for parts and the funds used toward programming. So bring in those old or slightly new cell phones and help save a life! Place them in the box in the Narthex.
