September 21, 2008 -- The congregation of North Kingstown United Methodist Church celebrated the hope of world peace by planting a “peace pole” at the church following its 10 AM worship service on Sunday September 21. The pole includes the words, “May peace prevail on earth," written in four languages. In 2001, the British and Costa Rican delegates to the United Nations introduced a declaration to fix a permanent date to focus on world peace. The day would be a day cease fire and with international cooperation would allow for the immunization for children, the movement of aid, and focus on becoming a culture of peace. The declaration was passed unanimously fixing September 21st to be World Peace Day!
