UMM Breakfast, December 12, 2009 -- The UMM met for breakfast and approved a $200 donation to Project Outreach to help the Open Table congregation in Providence feed the hungry. Open Table has had to move its food storage to its sanctuary after discovering a mold problem in its basement. The UMM also is sending a $100 donation to the North Kingstown Food Pantry. After the breakfast, the men helped move a refrigerator, donated by NK UMC member Marilyn Moffett, from Marilyn's home to the North Kingstown Food Pantry. Video Available :45 Windows Media Video

Jay Hickey acknowledged a card from the church's shepherding group which thanked the men for the great annual fish fry in September. The group discussed how to improve next year's fish fry and recorded a $650 donation to the North Kingstown Food Pantry. The UMM group also plans to make a donation to Rhode Island Hospice Care in memory of the late Kirk MacGregor. Jon Eaton volunteered to help the church update its forgotten memory book which records memorial gifts to the church. The recently discovered book has not been updated in some time. Fellowship talk included mourning the two Red Sox losses in the American League Divisional Series by most of the men gathered--with the notable exception of Steve Brooks who is quietly celebrating two Yankee victories over the Minnesota Twins. In the spirit of fellowship and faith, Steve was forgiven by the group.

The event, which began several years ago as a small fellowship event of the monthly Men's Breakfast group, was opened for the first time this year to the entire congregation of the church and friends. Donations raised at the dinner supported the North Kingstown Food Pantry, the designated mission of the United Methodist Men's group--chartered from that original Men's Breakfast club. All of the food and supplies for the event were donated purchases by members of UMM, resulting in all the proceeds from $5 ticket sales and the free will donations at the door going to the Food Pantry. $650 was raised for the local food pantry which feeds families in North Kingstown. The NK Food Pantry is housed at North Kingstown United Methodist Church. United Methodist Men still meet for breakfast on the second Saturday of each month at 8 AM. More about United Methodist Men

UMM remembers Kirk MacGregor -- The day after Kirk MacGregor's memorial service, the UMM paused at the beginning of its monthly breakfast to remember Kirk and pray for his family. The group will discuss suitable memorials for Kirk at its next meeting in August.

The group also set Saturday, September 26 as the date for its annual fish fry. This year's event will be open to the entire congregation by ticket. Proceeds from the tickets will benefit the North Kingstown Food Pantry. More details on the events will be announced in upcoming weeks during Sunday worship.

'Church Linebacker' and other man talk at UMM Breakfast, June 13, 2009

Why don't more men attend church services? It's a question asked in many churches around New England. Steve Brooks and Peter Pellegrino offered some reasons at the monthly breakfast meeting of UMM, Saturday June 13th. Steve, Pete and others from our group recently attended the annual New England conference meeting of UMM where the question was addressed by speakers who have researched it. Among the findings: services don't always relate to the everyday interests of men, sanctuaries are often decorated in what may be viewed as uninviting-to-men pastel colors, and committees that are not highly organized and structured don't attract men. The group today also spent time talking about how its church can do a better job of reaching out to people in the community to attract new members. Steve and Pete reported on some interesting films available to recruit new members. One relates to sports, often a popular theme with men, in which a 'church linebacker' is used to make a recruitment statement to young men. The group plans a special meeting to explore the topic of men and church more fully in the future. Plans are also underway for the annual fish fry which will be open this year to everyone in the church and people will be encouraged to bring a friend from the community. Annual donations to the North Kingstown Food Pantry will increase this year, according to president Jay Hickey

UMM Monthly Breakfast, April 11, 2009 -- Kirk returns and Ellen is a surprise visitor

Kirk MacGregor (second from the left) returned to UMM breakfast on April 11th for the first time after having been diagnosed with cancer. Kirk was in good spirits and looking forward to attending Easter worship on Sunday. Kirk says his wife Carolyn is recovering well from her shoulder surgery. Ellen Jacke (standing) was a welcomed gate crasher at the UMM meeting. Ellen stopped by to lobby support from the men for the church's upcoming Spring Yard Sale. As usual, Ellen was on her busy volunteer schedule. She declined to break bread with the group, but no doubt accomplished her mission.

March 14, 2009 - UMM gathered for breakfast meeting to learn history of UMM. A formal chartering ceremony will be held during an upcoming Sunday worship service, date to be determined. The UMM received a card from some of the women at NKUMC thanking us for the Valentine's Breakfast in February. UMM continues to raise money for the North Kingstown Food Pantry as part of its mission.

The monthly gathering of the Men's Breakfast has now organized as a chapter of United Methodist Men.
