Hard lessons from her daughter's death -- Anne Burke addresses dangers of dating violence in talk at United Methodist Women's Meeting

Published Saturday May 16, 2009

Anne Burke is an RN, a Health Educator in South Kingstown School Department and a resident of North Kingstown. She and her family founded the Lindsay Ann Burke Memorial Fund to honor the life of her daughter, Lindsay Ann, who at the age of 23 was murdered by her ex-boyfriend. Anne and her family worked very hard to get the Lindsay Ann Burke Law passed by the RI legislature.  This law requires that all school districts in RI have a dating violence policy. It requires annual dating violence education in grades 7-12 taught through the Health curriculum. It also, requires principals to get training on the subject of domestic violence.

Anne Burke talks about the death of her daughter and the path she now follows to educate others about the dangers of dating violence and relationship abuse.

Spa Day

March 21

A Spa Day!!! For the Women of NKUMC -  On March 21, the first day of spring– the UMW held an all day fun event that we called SPA DAY.

The word spa, according to the dictionary can mean resort; resort can mean - a way out, remedy, option. Remedy can mean – therapy, improve, take care of …therefore the term Spa Day to describe our March 21st meeting would be appropriate. This day was set up so you could choose all or any part of the day.  This day was meant to be a fun day for the women of the NKUMC.
